Let's Dip In

BUSINESS 💼

Monopoly Man

Google isn’t invincible after all. A federal judge just ruled that the tech giant created an illegal monopoly in the online search space, and the consequences could spread throughout the tech industry.

  • District judge Amit Mehta ruled on the 4-year-old lawsuit which accused Google of suppressing competition by paying to make its search engine the default on phones and browsers. Experts testified that Google spent over $10 billion annually just to stay as Apple’s default search engine.
  • Mehta agreed with the government’s allegations, finding that Google spent over $26 billion in 2021 alone to secure default status across the industry. The ruling could possibly see Google’s agreements voided, leaving Samsung and Apple free to develop and promote their own AI search engines.
  • Penalties will be decided in a separate trial set for September. Legal experts believe the ripple effects from this ruling may influence other ongoing antitrust lawsuits, including those against Meta and Amazon.

POLITICS 🤺

The Last Walz

Kamala Harris just made a huge choice. The Democratic presidential nominee announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her VP pick and it’s got a bunch of people wondering: who is he?

  • The 60-year-old served 24 years in the Army National Guard and simultaneously worked as a high school teacher/football coach before entering politics. He then served in the House until 2019, when he was elected as Minnesota’s Governor.
  • Initially a moderate Democrat known for supporting gun rights, Walz shifted further left as Governor, pushing for free college tuition and marijuana legalization. He reportedly won the VP candidacy over two other moderates, Josh Shapiro and Mark Kelly.
  • In his first appearance as VP candidate last night, Walz came out swinging at his opponent JD Vance, managing to sneak in a reference to Vance’s alleged couch enthusiasm, saying “I can’t wait to debate the guy... that is if he’s willing to get off the couch."

Dipper Poll

:📈 Today's Poll: VP

Tim Walz has kept a relatively low profile as Governor of Minnesota, but that’s all about to change thanks to his new role as VP nominee.
Some believe his blue-collar background as a veteran and teacher will help Kamala’s campaign, while others argue he’s not exciting enough to win over independents.
So overall:
Does Tim Walz Hurt Or Help Kamala’s Odds?

WORLD NEWS 🌎

Iran’s Irate

The war in Gaza is on the verge of turning into an all-out regional war. Iran is once again attacking US military personnel outside of its jurisdiction, and it may soon feel an American response.

  • At least 5 US troops and contractors were injured in the attack at an air base in western Iraq. Iran hasn’t claimed responsibility, but the intelligence community strongly suspect an Iran-backed militia was behind the bombing.
  • It wouldn’t be the first time – Iranian militias conducted over 150 attacks on US personnel in the first 3 months of the Israel-Hamas war. Speaking of which, the stakes in that war were raised yet again after an Israeli strike killed 4 in southern Lebanon.
  • Hezbollah retaliated with its own drone strikes, injuring 7 Israelis in return. The extremist paramilitary group is planning something even bigger, issuing a statement that it will avenge Israel’s assassination of one of its top commanders.
