Before We Dip In (TL;DR)
In today’s issue:
- SEALs suffer new, unexpected symptoms. 🪖
- Streamer pulls gun after harassing couple. 🤨
- Supreme Court agrees to hear 2 more cases. ⚖️
Let's Dip In
HEALTH 🏥
Hidden Danger
Being a Navy SEAL is undoubtedly dangerous. They undertake the deadliest missions, and even their training is far from safe. A new report reveals that SEALs suffer from an invisible threat, and there’s no escaping it.
- Weapons like grenades and rocket launchers create concussive shockwaves, and SEALs frequently deal with symptoms like insomnia and memory loss. This has led to at least a dozen Navy SEALs taking their own lives, with symptoms appearing before they turn 40 and dying at an average of 43.
- Post-mortem examinations of 8 SEALs' brains showed altered brain structures. Earlier studies have linked blast exposure to brain damage, but SEAL leadership had never made the connection to their own troops.
- The SEALs themselves tragically recognized their deteriorating conditions. Former SEAL David Metcalf wrote a note detailing his symptoms before his suicide, saying they “were not who I was, but have become who I am.”
CRAZY SH*T 🤨
Sketchy Streamers
Kick is back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The live streaming platform is facing backlash after an IRL streamer committed an insane crime.
- PrimeLightskin was IRL streaming with a friend on the Las Vegas strip when they stopped to harass a couple kissing. After the woman attempts to grab his phone, he appears to pull a gun and threaten to shoot the couple.
- It’s unclear whether the assault was real or staged, as no charges have been filed yet. Regardless, Kick banned him shortly after the clip went viral, and he’s not the only streamer giving them headaches.
- CEO Ed Craven has acknowledged the challenges of moderating IRL streams and added more moderation in the category. However, he swore Kick wouldn’t become "Twitch 2.0" by resorting to constant bans, possibly undermining these new measures.
POLITICS 🤺
Decisions, Decisions
Now that the Supreme Court has decided on a medley of high-profile cases, it otherwise might be time for the Justices to take a break. That might not happen anytime soon, however, as the nation’s highest Court immediately agreed to take 2 new, consequential cases.
- Texas enacted HB 1181 a few months ago. The controversial law requires porn sites to scan users’ IDs and display health warnings. Though a federal judge initially blocked the law, the Fifth Circuit gave it the OK, and now the Supreme Court will get the final say.
- The Supreme Court will also decide on the marketing of flavored vape products, which the FDA has banned for years under the pretext of protecting minors. Vape companies long argued that flavored vapes help adult smokers quit cigarettes. If they get their way, products like mango Juul pods could make a comeback.
- With the speed of which the Court has been deciding cases this year, don’t be surprised if one or both of these are decided in the coming weeks. Overturning the bans could have a major economic impact, so stay tuned to find out what happens.
